Teenagers

Adolescence and Feet

Adolescence is a period marked by rapid bone growth, hormonal fluctuations, and increased physical activity, all of which can impact the structure and function of the feet.

Foot Conditions in Teenagers

During this time, the growth plates in the bones of the feet are still open and susceptible to injury especially with sports. Common foot issues among teenagers include flat feet, high arches, overpronation, which can lead to discomfort, pain, and potential long-term problems if left untreated.

Additionally, the use of ill-fitting footwear, such as tight or narrow shoes, can exacerbate these issues and increase the risk of developing conditions like bunions, hammertoes. Some of the dermatological issues that are seen in teenagers’ feet are ingrown toenails, hypersudation and plantar warts.

Prevention

Regular foot care practices, including wearing supportive and properly fitting footwear, maintaining good hygiene, and performing stretching and strengthening exercises, are crucial for teenagers to promote healthy foot development and prevent injury. It’s also important for parents and caregivers to be proactive in addressing any foot concerns their teenagers may have and to seek professional podiatric care if necessary.
