Sports Podiatry

Sports

Sports podiatry focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of foot and ankle injuries and conditions related to sports and physical activity.

Foot Conditions in Athletes

Athletes, whether amateur or professional, place unique demands on their feet and lower limbs, often subjecting them to high levels of stress and impact. We are trained to understand the biomechanics of the foot and how it interacts with the rest of the body during various sporting activities.

Some common issues of sports-related foot and ankle injuries are sprains, strains, stress fractures, tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis.

Prevention

One key aspect of sports podiatry is biomechanical assessment of the foot and ankle using x-rays to understand how the bones and joints of the foot relate to each other when engaging in activities like walking, running, or sports-specific movements. This assessment helps identify any abnormalities or imbalances in foot structure, alignment, or function that may predispose the athlete to injury or affect their performance.

Depending on your condition, foot types and your footwear, prescribing custom-made orthotics to support feet, correct biomechanical issues, and alleviate pain or discomfort can be a solution, but not always. Working in collaboration with your physiotherapist and/ or exercise physiologist is always part of the solution.

By combining expertise in biomechanics, injury prevention, and rehabilitation, we can certainly help you stay active, competitive, and injury-free.
